Starting Point

This series of eight lessons takes a look at the starting point of the Christian life by studying the historical starting point of the Church. On the day the Church was born, the message that Peter preached, and the response the people made, reveals the core essentials of the Christian life.

"'Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.' When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do?'" Acts 2:36-37.

Everything in the Christian life begins with a revelation of Jesus - when we are "cut to the heart" by the word of God. It is our response to that revelation that determines what happens after that response.

"Peter replied, 'Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit...'" Acts 2:38.

The record in Acts then tells us that Peter "pleaded with them, 'Save yourselves from this corrupt generation'" (Acts 2:40). Those who responded did so in this way:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" Acts 2:42.
