Series: Principles of the Cross
"If any man will come after me; let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" Luke 9:23 (KJV).
"For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin" Romans 6:6 .This was a once-for-all act that took place 2,000 years ago. It becomes our personal experience as we reach back by faith and receive what He has accomplished for us.
"The death he died, he died to sin ONCE for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. IN THE SAME WAY, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" Romans 6:10-11.Jesus' death dealt with the sin problem that was in our flesh.
"For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man" Romans 8:3.This does not mean it is no longer possible for a Christian to sin. We still have the ability to choose to sin if we want to, but the wonderful truth of the Gospel is that we no longer HAVE TO because the very nature of sin that was within us has been dealt with by the Cross (see 1John 2:1 ) .
Philippians 2:5-8 gives us the directive:
"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!"
"As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem . . . " Luke 9:51.We, too, are called of God. Our mission is to reach every man and woman with the wonderful news that salvation is available through Christ (see Matthew 28:18-20).
"Again Jesus said, 'Peace be with youl As the Father has sent me, l am sending you' " John 20:21.No earthly comfort, possession, or reputation is more important than the purpose to which we are called. We, too, know our position and relationship with God in Christ and now, with our eyes firmly set on our mission, we take up our cross daily to see that mission fulfilled.
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" 1John 3:16.
" 'My food,' said Jesus, 'is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work' " John 4:34 (see also Hebrews 10:7 and Matthew 26:36-46).
". . . But I am among you as one who serves" Luke 22:24-27 (see also Mark 10:45;John 13:3-17).
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God" Hebrews 12:2 (see also Hebrews 2:10) .
