The fifteen millionth Bible ran off the Amity Bible printing press in Nanjing in March.
This new record was celebrated yesterday in Nanjing by Chinese church leaders and delegates from the United Bible Societies.
It is ten years since the press started rolling. The annual output has grown steadily, from about 500,000 copies in 1988, to nearly 3.4 million in 1996.
The Amity press is run as a joint venture between the Amity Foundation and the United Bible Societies. The Amity Foundation is a Chinese church-based social services organisation.
The Amity press is dependent on money from Bible Societies, like the Bible Society in New Zealand, to provide the special paper on which Bibles are printed.
More than three million Bibles are expected to be printed during 1997.
