Only unity will allow Christian churches to confront the major difficulties racking Latin America, such as poverty, violence, corruption and unemployment, according to two leaders of the Latin American Council of Churches.
In statements published in Costa Rica they stressed that the doctrinal differences separating the churches in Latin America were of secondary importance compared to the seriousness of the problems confronting the region. They said that the issues of poverty, unemployment, violence, corruption, environmental destruction and lack of respect for human rights required the churches in Latin America to work together.
